This course builds knowledge of simple machines, engineering, programming, and teamwork in an environment full of galactic fun! Designed by the experts at MIT, this unique system teaches students about simple machines, engineering, programming, and so much more. Working in pairs, students will create Star Wars and space-inspired robots. Models include AT-ST Biped, spinning TIE fighter, cannons, and other out-of-this-world models. Students will be working in pairs.
Unleash your inner hero in this creative STEAM adventure! In this camp, students will bring superheroes to life through storytelling, design, and beginner-friendly coding. Using Scratch, they will create simple interactive games where heroes move, jump, and overcome challenges while learning foundational coding concepts. Students will also step into the world of digital media by producing their own superhero stop-motion short film complete with props and sets they design themselves. This camp blends coding, art, and imagination. Students should have basic reading skills and be comfortable using a computer. Bring a USB drive on the last day.
Play with LEGO® Bricks. Build Robots. Make new friends at your school, and learn in the best way possible- through play! Solve puzzles by designing and testing LEGO® Mindstorms robots. Make your robot navigate a simple maze, detect obstacles, follow a light, and solve more complex problems. You may be surprised at how lifelike your robot is when you equip it with sensors to see colors and feel the slightest touch. Your creations will never sit still when you teach them to roll, walk, push, and even dance their way through obstacle courses. Professional Mentors Dakota Middle School and Community Education offer LEGO Robotics in partnership with the IBM LEGO Outreach (ILEO) program. Professional engineers from IBM will volunteer at your school and teach you about computer programming. Final Competition The IBM LEGO Education Outreach (ILEO) Competition is the culmination of Dakota Middle School's LEGO Robotics season. Teams of students from Southeastern Minnesota will display their engineering skills and use their robots to solve challenges. Rochester Community Education will provide transportation from Dakota to the event. Students must provide their own transportation home after the event. Family members are welcome to attend. ILEO Robotics Competition RCTC - Regional Sports Center 851 30th Ave SE, Rochester, MN 55904 December 10th from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Students will be bussed from school to the event, but they will need to be picked up at RCTC afterward. No Experience Required If you can put two LEGO® bricks together, then you can build a robot. Give instructions to your robot by connecting colorful blocks of code on your computer. Financial Assistance Families with financial need can request that the fee be waived for this activity.
