    What is the STEM Fair? The Rochester Regional STEM Fair is an event where students in grades 6-12 can showcase science and engineering projects. Prior to the event, students find a question or problem that interests them. They build prototypes or conduct experiments, sharing what they learned with their peers. The STEM Fair supports year round programming for youth with an emphasis on mentorship and community engagement. Learn more at the STEM Fair website. Who are the Friends of the STEM Fair? Friends of the STEM Fair is a team of adults who volunteer their time to support the students, science teachers, and volunteers who participate in the STEM Fair. They help with the behind-the-scenes work that makes these experiences possible, including event planning, volunteer recruitment, and fundraising.   • GRASP Summer Academic Review: Mail in Workbook (Gr. K-8)

    GRASP is an academic workbook correspondence program designed for students to review and maintain skills that were learned during the school year. Students complete nine lessons in math, reading or both over the summer. Each lesson takes about one hour to complete. Students will mail their answer sheets in pre-addressed envelopes directly to GRASP for correcting. All lessons must be completed and postmarked for correction by August 5th. Students will receive their scores back via email. Rochester Community Education will be contacting all participants to pick up their workbooks at Northrop when they are available. Please register your student for the grade they completed during the 2023/2024 school year. Registration deadline for this program is May 17th.

    GRASP is an academic workbook correspondence program designed for students to review and maintain skills that were learned during the school year. Students complete nine lessons in math, reading or both over the summer. Students will receive their scores back via email. New online option for students in Grades 4-8 only. If paper isn’t your thing, try the new online version! All materials are online only. Using the online option gives you the opportunity for immediate scoring and feedback. Instead of a book and paper copies, you will receive an email from GRASP on or before June 5th with website and login instructions. Please select online version during the registration process. All online lessons must be completed by August 10th. Please register your student for the grade they completed during the 2023/2024 school year. Registration deadline for this program is May 17th.
  • Home Alone (Gr. 2-7)

    Is your child ready for the independence of being home alone? Parents need to be sure their children have the skills and maturity to handle the responsibility safely. Whether it is for an hour after school or several hours a day during the summer, being trusted to be home alone can be a positive experience for a child who is mature and well prepared. This class for children will address several topics relating to being “Home Alone” including age guidelines, safe habits, house rules, after school routines, phone calls and door knocks, dog emergencies, personal safety, handling the unexpected, gun safety, severe weather, fire safety, intruders, and first aid tips. Students attend this class independently and should come prepared with a notebook and pen. Parents are encouraged to review the take home information and discuss it with their child.
  • Hooked on Fun: A Fishing Course for Beginners (Grades 3-6)

    This two-day introduction to fishing course will teach the basics of knot tying, equipment, bait, fish species, and outdoor ethics. Best of all, we will spend a day fishing! Day 1 will be spent in the classroom learning the important details of the basics of fishing. Day 2 will be spent fishing at Foster Arend Park! All fishing equipment and bait will be provided, however students are welcome to bring their favorite fishing pole, if they desire. Students will also receive a small goodie bag they can use for their next fishing adventure! Parents/guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend this course with their students and do not need to register.
  • I Want To Be A Published Author! (Gr. 3-6)

    Have you ever wanted to become a published author? Now is your chance! In this course, students will create interesting characters, build a plot with plenty of action, and write and illustrate a story they are proud to share with family and friends. Using a kit from Studentreasures Publishing, each student will publish their own book and receive one hardcover copy.
  • John Marshall Esports (Spring 2024 Season)

    John Marshall Esports: Building Community and Career Pathways through Team-based Competition Compete Against Other Schools John Marshall is a member of the Minnesota Varsity League and competes online against high schools across Minnesota. We will participate in the team-based, rocket-powered car soccer game Rocket League, played in person on John Marshall computers. Students also have the opportunity to compete in speed chess and Fortnite using their own devices. We plan to add additional games based on student interest. Students do not necessarily need to compete to be part of the team. As production team members, students can support the competitive teams by developing graphic design, business, and tech skills. Requirements Members of John Marshall Esports must uphold the same respect, sportsmanship, and professionalism that is expected of all athletes at John Marshall High School. Students must be in grades 8-12 AND must be over the age of 13. Students must attend John Marshall High School or live in the JM attendance area. This includes many students who attend Dakota Middle School, John Adams Middle School, ALC, or are homeschooled. Students must meet all Minnesota Varsity League requirements, including maintaining a 2.0 GPA. There are limited openings for varsity and junior varsity teams. Please note that this application to become a JM Esports team member does not guarantee placement on a varsity or JV team. There are year round opportunities for all members to practice, scrimmage, and be on a production team. What is Rocket League? Rocket League is one of the most popular esports played by high schools in Minnesota. The rules are simple: each player drives a rocket-powered car and tries to shoot a giant soccer ball into the opposing team's net. Skilled players are able to perform aerial maneuvers, flying the ball across the field. Rocket League is rated E for Everyone. What is needed to participate? Personal Epic Games account (for playing Rocket League), personal Discord account (for team communication). Where does the team play? In-person at John Marshall. Laptops and controllers are provided. What is Fortnite? Fortnite is a popular battle royale game featuring a unique blend of combat, building, and exploration. Fortnite is rated T for Teen. What is needed to participate? Personal device and internet connection, personal Epic Games account (for playing Fortnite online), personal Discord account (for team communication). Where does the team play? At home. Devices are not provided. What is Chess in the Minnesota Varsity League? Student play games through Chess.com in a "blitz" format with only 5 minutes on the clock for each player. What is needed to participate? Personal device and internet connection, personal Chess.com account (for playing Chess online), personal Discord account (for team communication) Where do students play? Anywhere they can bring a smartphone with internet. Devices are not provided.   • Kellogg Bike Club (Gr.6-8)

    Would you like to learn how to ride a bike safely to and from school? As a means of transportation during the summer? Would you enjoy learning the mechanics and engineering to fix your own bike? How about earning a free bike (if you don’t have one to ride)? Learn some new trails to ride with friends and maybe grow to learn mountain biking techniques? We will meet once a week with the first three meetings consisting of street safety, bike preparation, and simple fix-it techniques so you can be self-sufficient, followed by three weeks of progressively longer group bike rides. No experience necessary. All tools provided. Everyone grades 6-8 welcome. Participation essential! No Bike? No problem! We Bike Rochester will offer students a chance to earn a tuned-up bike they can keep after the six-week class is completed.

    Fun for Everyone! Kellogg Disc Golf is open to all students regardless of previous experience. Spend time outside with your friends, work with an experienced coach, and hone your throwing technique. Disc Golf Club includes a field trip to a local disc golf course. March 28 - All students attend practice.     Kindergarten Prep: Churchill (Gr. K/Fall 2024)

    Ignite your child’s excitement for Kindergarten by enrolling in Kindergarten Prep Camp. Transitioning from preschool or daycare to Kindergarten is a significant milestone for both children and their families. To support this transition, the Kindergarten team at Churchill along with Community Education staff, have worked hard to design an immersive experience to help prepare incoming Kindergarteners for their first day of school. Experience what a regular day in Kindergarten will be like with: *Hands-on Learning *Art Projects *Purposeful Play *Number Games *Letter Recognition Activities *Classroom Routines and Procedures This class is for Churchill incoming Kindergarteners but due to construction at Churchill this class will be held at Hoover and taught by one of the members of the Churchill Kindergarten team.
