    Fun for Everyone! Community Education sports are open to all students regardless of previous experience. We focus on gameplay, teamwork, understanding of rules, and knowledge of basic positions. Learn fundamental skills and apply them during games against your friends. Any student can attend on the first day of practice to learn more about this activity even if they have not registered yet. Financial Assistance Available When registering, please select the price that applies to you. $50.00 - The normal registration fee for this activity. $0 - Please select this option only if your household qualifies for Educational Benefits as described by the Minnesota Department of Education.     Dakota Chess Club (Gr. 6-8)

    Chess Club gives students an opportunity to play friendly games of chess against their peers in a low-stress environment, as well as learning new strategies to improve their own game. Students of all levels are welcome to come. Players will be coached by Master Thompson who has won major chess tournaments in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and the United States. Scholarships Available Families with financial need can request that the fee be waived for this activity.   • Dakota Cooking Club

    Welcome to the Dakota Cooking Club! we are excited to offer students the opportunity to explore the fun and creativity of cooking while learning valuable life skills. Our club focuses on teaching kitchen safety, basic cooking techniques, teamwork, and healthy food choices in a positive and supportive environment. About Cooking Club Cooking Club will meet Wednesdays ( listed dates located in Eleyo) in SLICE Kitchen. Each session will include: A short lesson on Kitchen tools, safety, or nutrition. A hands-on cooking activity. Group cleanup and discussion about what we learned. All recipes will be age- appropriate and will ingredients that are safe and manageable for middle school students. Safety First safety is out top priority. Before any cooking begins, students will receive instruction on: Proper handwashing and hygiene. Safe use of knives, stovetops, ovens, and other kitchen equipment. How to prevent and respond to minor kitchen accidents. Students are expected to follow all safety guidelines and listen carefully to instructions at all times. Injury and Accident Policy While every precaution will be taken to ensure a safe environment , Minor injuries ( such as cuts or burns) can occur in cooking setting. All activities will be supervised by school staff at all times. first aid will be administered on-site for minor injuries. Parents/guardians will be notified of any injures that may occur. In the event of a more serious injury, emergency medical services will be contacted immediately and parents will be notified as soon as possible. Parents/Guardians must complete the club permission and emergency contact form before participation. Allergies and Food Sensitivities: Please inform the club advisor, Hannah Sebranek, of any food allergies or dietary restrictions. We will make every effort to adapt recipes or provide alternatives to ensure all students can safely participate.

    Improvisational Comedy at Dakota If you have ever seen the show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, you know that simple games can lead to hilarious results. Join Mr. Andino, one of our Dakota counselors, and try a wide range of improv games that are a perfect introduction to acting for students of all experience levels.   • Dakota LEGO Robotics (Gr. 6-8)

    Play with LEGO® Bricks. Build Robots. Make new friends at your school, and learn in the best way possible- through play! Solve puzzles by designing and testing LEGO® Mindstorms robots. Make your robot navigate a simple maze, detect obstacles, follow a light, and solve more complex problems. You may be surprised at how lifelike your robot is when you equip it with sensors to see colors and feel the slightest touch. Your creations will never sit still when you teach them to roll, walk, push, and even dance their way through obstacle courses. Professional Mentors Dakota Middle School and Community Education offer LEGO Robotics in partnership with the IBM LEGO Outreach (ILEO) program. Professional engineers from IBM will volunteer at your school and teach you about computer programming. Final Competition The IBM LEGO Education Outreach (ILEO) Competition is the culmination of Dakota Middle School's LEGO Robotics season. Teams of students from Southeastern Minnesota will display their engineering skills and use their robots to solve challenges. Rochester Community Education will provide transportation from Dakota to the event. Students must provide their own transportation home after the event. Family members are welcome to attend. ILEO Robotics Competition RCTC - Regional Sports Center 851 30th Ave SE, Rochester, MN 55904 December 10th from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Students will be bussed from school to the event, but they will need to be picked up at RCTC afterward. No Experience Required If you can put two LEGO® bricks together, then you can build a robot. Give instructions to your robot by connecting colorful blocks of code on your computer. Financial Assistance Families with financial need can request that the fee be waived for this activity.     Students will analyze movies through a critical lens. They will discuss different aspects of film including plot narratives, cinematography, and underlying themes.

    Students will work on the fundamentals of weight lifting gaining knowledge on all the basic lifting techniques and gaining strength. Excellent for all students but especially those within sports programs.
  • Middle School RYF: Rochester Youth Fencers (Gr. 6-8)

    Rochester Youth Fencers (RYF), a local volunteer-operated fencing club, invites you to join and learn a competitive sport that lasts a lifetime! We are offering this opportunity for you to master the skills and techniques at your pace. It is designed to accommodate all levels of experience and skill level. Focus will be on learning the fundamentals and rules of Fencing, teamwork, sportsmanship, and most of all, having fun! All equipment is provided. PRACTICE - Players will report to practice immediately following dismissal from school on their team’s scheduled days. All practices will take place at your home school. CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – Saturday, December 6th, 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM at Willow Creek Middle School. After all classes have completed, you will represent your home school to compete in the Middle School Championship. Medals will be awarded and a trophy will be awarded to the home school that has the most wins on a point assignment basis. Roster is limited to minimum and maximum of 3 to 15 players respectively for each home schools. Registration will be taken on a first come first serve basis not ability level. All players must pre-register in order to participate and will not be allowed to participate until registration has been received. Parent is required to sign a waiver form before student starts practice. There will be a limited route late bus service available for students who need transportation home after practice. Health and Safety Fencing is an extremely safe sport. Protective gear - All equipment provided meet standards required by United States Fencing Association (USFA), which is the governing body of Fencing sport in the U.S.A. Jacket, plastic chest protector, head mask are provided. Student is responsible to bring a glove for hand protection. Students are required to have all body part covered by clothing, i.e. no skin exposure. Fencing instrument – Students learn to use the most common instrument, “foil”, for combat purpose. Foil are protected at the tip with rubber point or metal switch for electric scoring machine. Foil is made of a special type of steel, that allows flexible bending and if broken, the blade will break cleanly with no sharp edges to cause any bodily harm. Foil will only be used during sparing between two fencers in a bout when head masks are deployed. At all other time, the foil will be strictly controlled. Face mask – Due to the nature of the sport, fencers are trying to get away from the opponent to avoid hit, that makes Fencing a low to medium risk sport. RYF has been operated for over 25+ years under Rochester Community Education program and we never had a single incident that is caused by equipment failure or staff negligence. Our goal is to provide a safe and fun environment for all interested student to learn a new competitive sport.
