"Glensheen" at the St. Paul History Theatre

A musical that uncovers the murder mystery at the great Glensheen Mansion on Lake Superior in Duluth. This American tragedy was one of the most intriguing and public stories in Minnesota history. Over a period of 75 years, over 400,000 children traveled by train to find new parents and families. Learn why the children traveled, what conditions they left behind, and who assisted them in finding a new family. Through a PowerPoint, videos, and many orphan train riders’ stories, you will find you'll want to learn more about these children.

Abdominal Strengtheners That Won't Stress Your Back or Neck-Online

A few of the reasons abdominal muscles can weaken and lose shape are past pregnancies, surgeries, sitting at a desk all day, and poor posture. In this workshop, you will learn a series of extremely effective exercises that will quickly strengthen all four layers of abdominal muscles, especially the deepest layer without stressing your back or neck joints and without having to get on the floor. Don't waste time with traditional crunches. Learn a different, more effective way to flatten your stomach, re-shape your waistline, and prevent/relieve lower back discomfort. Abstract Painting/Mark Making Workshop

Abstract Painting/Mark-making for Continuing or New Attendees: In this class, you will paint your very own original series of 4 mini abstract paintings of imagined or remembered landscapes or botanical garden scenes on an 11x17” Bristol paper using acrylic paints, crayons and pencils. I will guide you on how to harmonize colors and use various mark-making and design techniques to kickstart your abstract art journey and develop your own creative voice. Continuing creatives will have the option to work and create just the single large painting on the 11 x14 art paper to hone their skills and enjoy working in a fun group setting. I will also introduce new element(s) and tool(s) for mark-making, to explore in each session so you can continue developing your personal style of creating. Repeat enrollments are encouraged to keep making your art in an inviting and friendly environment. A $10 cash only supply fee will be collected on each day for supplies made available by the instructor while attending or you may bring your own supplies. Supplies list as follows: White gesso, Bristol Art Paper smooth surface size 11x14” and your choice of red, yellow, blue, black and white acrylic paints and glazing liquid, and a selection of acrylic brushes and palette knives. Asian Brush Painting: Continuing

When executed with masterful technique, a single ink brushstroke is capable of conveying vitality, delicacy, and contemplation—the essence of Chinese philosophy and spirit. It is this “life force” or chi (pronounced chee) that the artist aspires to capture and express through brush painting. Unlike European-trained artists, those trained in traditional Chinese brush painting techniques do not try to create a realistic rendering of the external appearance of a subject, but instead seek to capture its inner spirit and mindfulness, which helps prevent dementia, promote longevity, and good health. A $25 supply fee will be collected the first night for all required supplies (2 brushes, ink, 60 sheets of rice paper) unless you already have them. Cash or Check only.

Barn Quilt Block

Come to Historic Tunnel Mill in the valley and paint your own Barn Quilt Block. During the class you will work on your pattern that you have chosen from one of the offered blocks, tape and paint your barn quilt block. Tips on taping and painting your barn quilt block will be taught. We will offer some basic patterns and sizes for you to choose from ahead of class. We are using an aluminum composite which is very light weight and durable for exterior use. Sizes to choose from: 4 x 4 ($200), 3 x 3 ($150), 2 x 2 ($100) or 12" x 12" ($50). Supplies will be furnished for the completion of the blocks. We will furnish paints, rollers and brushes as needed. Learn the basics of working with oils. Sketching out your painting, how to apply paint to the canvas, different painting mediums, mixing colors and brush care. If you made a canvas in my previous class, you can bring it along or purchase your own at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Any size up to 30”x40”. Bike Lanes, Bike Boxes, and Cycle-tracks

We will review traffic laws pertaining to bicyclists and learn about correct roadway positioning and how to navigate the bike lanes, bike boxes, and the cycle-tracks on North Broadway. The Minnesota Bicycling Handbook published by the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota will be provided. Then we will take a tour of some of the roadways with bike lanes, bike boxes, and the cycle-tracks on North Broadway. Attendees should bring their own bikes and helmets. Blacksmith Beginning

Come to Historic Tunnel Mill for the annual beginning blacksmith classes. Basic blacksmith techniques will be taught: heating, drawing out materials, upsetting, bending, and twisting techniques in steel material. Students will start by making fire tending tools and move on to spend time on special projects as desired. Luke Venhuizen is our instructor this year. He is excited to get together at the mill to tend the fire and shape the metal.
