Forging the Viking Knife

2026 Adult Winter/Spring Catalog

In this class, students will learn traditional hand forging skills to make iron items typical of those found in 8th-10th century Norway. Students will make a fire steel, candle holder, and Viking knife. Blacksmithing experience is helpful but not required. (See Introduction to the Forge).

Instructor will provide: all necessary equipment and supplies, beverages, and snacks. You will need to wear/bring: long pants, leather shoes (boots preferred), gloves, safety glasses/hearing protection, face mask, and your lunch. You may bring your own hammer/tools if you prefer. All skill levels welcome—no experience required.

Homestead Arts Farm - Mark Grimes


Mark followed his interest in blacksmithing by taking classes at the North House Folk School in Northern Minnesota. After his North House experience, Mark went on to set up his own blacksmith shop at his home in rural Pine Island. Mark is eager to teach blacksmith skills to others.
