DNA: Crime Scene Investigation (Gr. 3-5)

Youth Enrichment / STEAM (Science) -
2025 Winter/Spring Youth

This class will explore DNA and how it is used in Forensics. We will start with the collection of material from a crime scene. We will map the scene, collect evidence, find the suspects, collect the evidence and finally solve the crime. Students will learn about the structure of DNA, collect DNA, isolate DNA from strawberries, run gel electrophoresis on the samples and determine the source of blood found at the scene. In the process, they will also look at other possible forensics tools including fingerprinting, hair analysis, chemical analysis, and the time of death through body temperature and entomology.

This course is taught at Century High School biology teachers and students. An African Gray Parrot, Miss Ticket,  will also be helping as a teaching assistant.
