Uncover the secrets behind their glow, learn how to bring the magic home, and glean some practical tips for attracting fireflies to your own yard and what makes up their habitats. This class will be held outdoors (weather permitting), you will be contacted if the event is rescheduled due to weather. Chairs will be provided.

  • Evening Paddle on the Pond

    Discover the joy of kayaking with our introductory program at Quarry Hill Nature Center pond! Perfect for beginners, our instructor will guide you through boat design, paddling skills, and boat handling in a safe, supportive environment. Enjoy the tranquility of gliding across the calm waters while observing local wildlife up close. With all equipment provided and a focus on fun and safety, it’s the perfect way to dive into this exciting sport. No experience necessary. Life jackets are provided and required to be worn at all times. Rain Date is the following Friday, June 5.
  • Introduction to Fly Fishing

    Learn the basics of fly casting and fishing, and discover where and how to fly fish in southeast Minnesota for trout and other species. This class will get you started with indoor casting instruction and practice, fly fishing knots, stream entomology, flies for the region, reading the water, and more. After completing this class, you'll be prepared for the fishing season! Additional assistance provided by Hiawatha Trout Unlimited members.

Thanks to our curiosity, imagination, and urge to explore, we now know that planets like our Earth are everywhere! The Sun is just one of hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy, the Milky Way. With the world’s most powerful telescopes, we are able to explore more and more of the Universe. What we have found so far has surpassed even the wildest expectations of scientists as well as authors of science fiction. We have discovered that most stars have planets! These distant worlds are just waiting to be discovered, Out There! Suggested ages 10 and up. Please enter through door #6 at Mayo High School.

  • Minnesota Songbird Discovery and Building a Birdhouse

    Join us at the S.M.A.R.T. Garden as we discover Minnesota songbirds that may inhabit this unique landscape of prairie, pond, and mature trees with soft landing perennials. We will discuss common birds found in these habitats and how we can best support these populations. Following our birding experience at the garden, we will end with building a birdhouse (supplies provided). During this project, we will share special birdhouse features and important considerations to make when installing and maintaining your birdhouse. This class will be held outdoors (weather permitting), you will be contacted if the event is rescheduled due to weather. Chairs will be provided.

Who comes alive when the sun goes down? Experience the symphony of frogs and listen for the hoots of owls. Perfect for nature enthusiasts and anyone curious about the mysteries of the night. Join us for an unforgettable evening and witness the beauty and intrigue of nature in a whole new ‘light’! Participants should bring a flashlight and be prepared to hike up to a mile on uneven terrain. Rain date is the following Friday, May 8.
